Question by  FunGuy (35)

What do I need to know about caring for a baby parakeet?

What are the differences from caring for an adult, which I have done before.

Baby parakeets are more sensitive to weather changes then adults, so keeping a cage cover and constant temperature in your house is key. Baby parakeets also require a different nutritional diet, suplements can be added to regular bird feed so that babies can be healthy.

While your baby parakeet has no feathers, or only small pin feathers, you will need to make him or her a nest of tissues in a small container. The container should be very snug. Do not use cotton, grass or twigs or existing birds nests for the baby parakeet's nest.

I woud assume that there needs to be more constant feeding times than with an adult bird, possibly every three hours. Also, you need to be able to train the bird to accept food from you, so maybe a puppet simulating an adult bird would be useful too.

Make sure the baby is nestled in a bed of loose tissue to ensure he doesn't sprawl and injure a wing. Be sure to feed him lots of vitamin and mineral enriched foods.
