The VW'S are one of the hardest cars to work on but there is not to much to worry the emissions light because it will keep running.

It is probably due to some fault in the catalytic converter of your vehicle leading to environmental damage. Refer to the owner's manual for help and get it diagnosed by an authorized VW service centre as quickly as possible.

The first step is to take it to a parts store such as Advance Auto and have them scan it. It is most likely either the EGR valve or an oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor is the easier of the two to replace, but neither is overly difficult to replace.

You need to take it somewhere and locate what the problem is. Then you can start the process of repairing it.

If the Jetta is a 1996 or newer vehicle it has the OBD II system, which means you can take it to your nearest Autozone or Advance Auto Parts and they will read the codes from the system for free. The codes should help in diagnosing the problem.

Take it to a shop and have the car scanned. They'll determine exactly what the problem is, turn off the light, and fix the problem. It's probably an EGR valve.

Basically that means its time to take your car in for some repair or oil change in most cases. Don't panic it's completely normal and tends to happen to every car after a few years.

This could be a serious problem, you may have an oil leak in your engine and oil is getting burnt off in your car. There are other less-serious things that this could be, but I would get it checked out at a mechanic.

Get a diagnostic unit from a local parts store. The port is next to the drivers side feet. Read the code and look it up.

The best thing to do is to go to Auto Zone and have them put the obd scanner and they will tell you what is wrong with the car and they can also give you the code.

I would really take this in to your local auto mechanic if you really don't have any knowledge on this topic. It seems like you may have some transmission issues and may lead to more problems.
