The water and oil are the main fluids removeing heat from the motor. Check the oil level and pressure for good oil flow through the motor. Water is cirulated by a water pump on the front of the motor and an impeller in the outdrive. These also should be checked.

Check the blown head gasket, if that fails the coolant in the engine may leak and that can make your engine hot.

Stop the engine, then check the cooling water intake for debris that might be blocking the flow of water to the engine. If the engine is equipped with a water filter, check it also.

The most common cause of overheating is a damaged water impeller. How hard it is to replace depends on the type of motor you have but the best thing to do is take it to a marine mechanic.

Immediately turn the boat off to prevent damage to the engine. Leave it off until the engine doesn't seem to be radiating excessive heat.
