Well they were short for the most part and a bit more elegant. They were not as revealing as the ones that are available on the market today. The dresses were knee length.
It depends on what part of the decade, but generally 50's prom dresses had very full A-line skirts with crinoline underskirts to make them poofy. Cap sleeves were very popular.
