I wouldn't suggest buying prom dresses online. You can never really be sure of the quality of the item you receive, no matter how it looks in the pictures. If I were you, I'd go out and find a thrift or second-hand store. Yes, they're used. But many of them will be totally unique and in good condition.

To get a good prom dress at a discountes rate, I would recommend that you shop at a designer wholesale site. Also, I would recommend bidding sites. A lot of businesses have designer dresses from the year before they are trying to get sale and they offer them to you at a discounted rate.

Sometimes you can buy discounted prom dresses from thrift stores. Not all of them are too used to be good. Also, some schools have programs for people who can't afford prom dresses so that they can still attend.

The best place to check for discounted dresses would be ebay. You can find some awesome dresses there at wonderful prices. Also, if you have a local thrift shop or consignment shop check there for used prom dresses at great deals.

I would honestly recommend stores like Loehmann's or Nordstrom Rack. These two stores carry a lot of discounted designer goods (especially Nordstrom Rack) most of which are really cute as well.
