Hematuria, blood in the urine, is often caused by renal issues. Many times there is also protein or calcium found in the urine. When these crystalize, they can be very painful and become kidney stones. This can be because of kidney desease, genetic or otherwise, as well as environmental factors such as lack of water or excess sodium in diet.

It could be from many health conditions, including but not limited to... urinary tract infection, kidney stones, sexually transmitted disease and in males it can be from prostate inflammation. Do not let it go untreated or a more serious illness could develop.

Blood in the urine is not normal and should be evaluated by a physician. A urinary tract infection could be a cause, but they are many other more severe conditions.

The most common cause of blood in the urine (hematauria) is kidney stones. The kidney stones (either uric acid formed or calcium formed) have sharp edges and tear at the kidney, ureters and bladder. This will cause blood to apprear in the urine. Try increasing your liquid intake to alleviate this problem.

Anything could be the cause of it, you need to have it checked out though, it could be very serious. The doctor can tell you more. You may need to have test run to find out.
