Soaps and household cleaning chemicals can cause your nails to become very dry. Try covering your hands with protective gloves when doing household chores such as dishwashing, and switch hand soaps in your home to moisturizing varieties. If you have been doing a lot of swimming in pools, the chlorine can also cause dry outs.

Just really dry air or low humidity. Or it could be because you are washing your hands too often and not using lotion afterward.

If you use perfumed lotions, they contain alcohol that dry out your fingernails and cuticles. Also, if you regularly expose your hands to chemicals, like chlorine in a pool or dish soap, that could dry them out too.

The most common cause of dry skin and nails is inadequate fluid consumption. The minimum recommendation is a minimum of eight, eight-ounce glasses of water per day. While certain other beverages may "count," caffeine is dehydrating so anything with caffeine should not be counted. Generally, at least half should be plain water.
