There are several possibilities. Most common is caused by sleeping with the head propped too high on a pillow. Muscle pulls in upper shoulders account numerous cases of muscle pain. Cervical disk problems (e.g. compressed disk, ruptured disk, etc.) are also responsible, as well as conditions as Anklosing Spondylosis, Arthritis, and Skeletal Hyperostosis.

Perhaps, you are having some form or spasm and that you stretched your neck the wrong way. Or in the worst case issue, the tissue has been torn and that is why there is pain.

If you are experiencing deep tissue neck pain, there may be a sprain in your muscle around the area if you have been doing heavy work caused by injury of the ligament of the spine. Injury to the spinal muscle (strain) can also be a factor. Poor sleeping or sitting position can cause deep tissue neck pain.

Stress has many affects on the body; muscle stiffness and pain are common symptoms. Stress can affect the GI Tract, cancer, colds, depression, TMJ, hypertension, heart disease, etc. Without an outlet like exercise, deep breathing, laughter and plain old fun, stress can rule. It's best to see your doctor.

You may be sitting in an improper way during your work or may be watching TV/computer contineously which will cause neck pain. Consult an Orthopaedic Surgeon who may advice you to wear a Cervical Collar for a particular period alongwith some medicine. You may try Ayurveda treatment also.
