It could be senility, just like in humans. As a cat gets older, its mental faculties can deteriorate. However, one should always rule out physical conditions with a trip to the vet. They can perform special 'geriatric" blood tests for an older cat to see if any physical condition could be causing it.

Put simply, the cat is getting older. 13 years is quite a long life for a cat. This is toward the end of a life span for an indoor cat. Outdoor cats rarely even get to this age. If your cat is often confused, or isn't eating because of the confusion, you should take her to the vet.

There are many reasons for confusion in an older cat. They could have suffered a stroke, a chronic illness (CHF) or may have feline diabetes with an acclerated blood sugar. It could also have vision or hearing problems that developed with age.

i would think age is a factor in that case. a 13 year old cat is elderly in cat life. just like elderly humans who suffer from dementia and memory loss.
