There can be quite a few reasons, such as blockage, an infection, a behavior problem, or a possible muscle control problem. The best way to try and pin point it is to go to your veterinarian and discuss the problem and let them check your dog.

The most common cause are urinary bladder stones, urinary tract infections, cancer, prostate disease, kidney disease and rarely incontinence. The canine should be taken to the vet to have urine sample or urinalysis checked. This test will help to know the cause.

This can range from bladder stones, infection or diet. Bladder stones as stated by the veterinary department of UC Davis, is caused by too much Vitamin C and not enough Calcium in the diet. If the bladder stone becomes too large it will need to be surgically removed. As for an infection, the urine will need testing to decipher.
