It could be many things. Not enough water is the main cause. but also if you are watering during the peak daylight hours you could be burning the grass. Also if you have pets the urine from a animal can kill grass because.

One reason may be due to a drought, or servere lack of rain in the area. This could also be due to a lack of sunlight. Because chlorophyll (green substance) in grass requires proper photosynthesis to be active, if there is a prolonged lack of sunlight, photosynthesis cannot take place

Browning grass can be the result of a lot of different problems. Over-fertilization can cause browning. It can also be the result of poor soil or a lack of water. A less likely possibility is some sort of disease. Regardless, the browning does mean that something is wrong and your grass is dying.

The cause of brown grass is a lack of photosynthesis. Sunlight is needed for grass to grow and when the grass is brown, it is dying.
