This often happens during pregnancy due to the position of the baby. At times they can get a foot underneath your ribcage. Gently massage the area to get the baby to move to a different position and it should relieve the ache.

Pregnancy tends to cause significant stretching of abdominal muscles and ligaments that hold the uterus in place. As these stretch, they will feel like muscle pulls. Alternatively, pains on the side could be caused by the fact that the baby is pushing up against internal organs which are being forced to move upwards to make room for the child.

The cause of the side ache can depend on the location. During second and third trimester, round ligament pain can cause lower side ache near the pelvic region. Round ligament pain can be sharp or it can radiate. If your side aches are higher, it could be caused by gall stones, or more seriously by complications from pre-eclampsia.

This could be where the baby is positioned. To be on the safe side call the doctor and have him check this out. Usually these aches go away when the baby turns.
