What could be causing a brownish cervical mucus if I know I'm not pregnant?

It's almost always just old blood left over from your last menstrual cycle. It can also be a result of trauma to the cervix. This can be caused by normal sexual activity simply by the penis striking the cervix, especially in more energetic intercourse. If there are no other worrying symptoms, you're probably just fine.

Some women spot, or bleed, very slightly when ovulating or occasionally as the result of minor cervical trauma resulting from activities such as horseback riding or vigorous sexual activity. You should make sure that your annual pap smear is up to date to rule out cervical cancer, though that is not a very likely cause.

Brown cervical mucus is most of the time the left overs of your period. If you haven't gotten your period yet but have had sex within the last couple of weeks, it could be implantation bleeding which would not show up on a pregnancy or blood test yet. Discharge changes right before a period too.

1. Your period could be late, and this brownish mucus is a precursor of it starting. The older blood has tinged the mucus brown instead of red. 2. You are having a miscarriage. 3. If you have been douching or using feminine sprays, this could be a residue causing irritation and shedding.
