There are many different compression formats Windows uses. Some of the most common ones are .zip which can be opened with WinZip, .WMV files which are used for video compression, NTFS compression is available to compress volumes of information, also. .rar is another common compression file which is very similar to .zip.

In Audio, WMA is the standard, in video, MPG Layer 2 is the standard, and in file compression. ZIP was added in Windows XP.

For pictures - PNG, JPEG, GIF; for video - WMV, MPEG etc; In general the formats depend on the data that you are looking at. But Windows can generate ZIP-files.

You can use NTFS compression to compress individual files, folders, & NTFS volume. To compress an NTFS volume: Click Start, next My Computer. Right-click the volume you want to compress, and then click Properties. On the General tab, click to select the Compress Volume to save disk space check box, then click OK. In Confirm Attribute Changes, choose your option.
