After the Constitution was adopted, New York City was the Federal capital from 1789 - 1790. George Washington was first inaugurated in front of Federal Hall, on Wall St.

The city of New York became the first Federal capital after the US Constitution was drafted in 1789. Congress met in New York until 1790 when Philadelphia supplanted New York as the nation's capital. Washington, DC became the capital in 1800.
