Muscle knots are basically constant muscle spasms where the tissue stays in a constant state of contraction. These can be induced by stress or overexertion as well as just sleeping or moving the wrong way.

Sitting hunched over at a computer chair or desk chair for hours can contribute. Also, sleeping incorrectly can really strain your shoulders.

Poor posture, excessive sweating, repetitive activity at a desk or computer can all cause muscle knots in your shoulder muscles. In addition, a more severe underlying cause could be problems with your spinal disks, so caution and discussion with your physician is warranted.

Knots in your shoulder were probably caused by more stress and strain than they were used to handling. The discomfort should ease over time.
