Glands can become painful for many different reason. Lymphatic glands swell when they are fighting illness which causes them to be painful. Painful glands can be symptons of many different diseases, specially if they are swollen. Diseases such as AIDS and lupus and cancers. Glands in your throat such has your thyroid can became painful because of thyroid disorders.
