Fingernail ridges are generally not a sign of illness, but they are unattractive. They're caused by a lack of natural oils from the nailbed, usually a hereditary trait.

Fingernail ridges can be caused by lack of vitamins, improper care, and the can be the result of long term weather conditions in your area. To help, make sure you are ingesting plenty of calcium and potassium, and try using lotions and cuticle oils to take care of your hands.

Vertical ridges are common and usually not a sign to worry; may become more prominent as you grow older. Horizontal ridges can mean that you have an underlying medical condition such as a respiratory disorder, lack of iron, thyroid problem, or poor circulation, or something as simple as a previous injury or is caused by certain medications.
