Ear pain could be because of a variety of reasons. The infection is the main reason. An untreated common cold can lead to severe ear congestion and result in pain. Ear wax getting infected and the infection moving inside the ear can also ultimately lead to external ear pain if not detected in time

External ear pain, unlike that involving the internal ear is more usually due to external factors such as extremes in temperature, bites and skin irritations that can transmit pain into the ear. Often inner ear pressure, usually behind the ear drum, will cause a sharp pain that radiates to what feels like the outer ear. See an ENT doctor.

External ear pain can be caused by cauliflower ear. This often occurs when struck by a blunt force on the outside of the ear and can linger for days.
