What causes dandruff?

It is possible for an infection to cause dandruff, but it is more likely that it is just a dry scalp. It might be worthwhile to have a dermatologist take a look if you suspect your dandruff is caused by an infection, but I would try OTC dandruff treatments first.

Dandruff can be caused by poor hygiene or shampooing the scalp too much. It's recommended to shampoo a few times a week at most. No, it's not an infection.

Dandruff is dead skin that flakes off from the scalp. People who do not wash their hair often enough tend to have it. Also, temperature extremities (being too hot or too cold) can cause dandruff.
