The medical term for the 'pins and needle' feeling is paresthesia. Decreased circulation can cause this, especially in your arms or legs. In your back, it may be a sign of some sort of neuropathy, such as a pinched or inflamed nerve. Accompanied by a rash, it could be a viral infection of your spinal nerves called herpes zoster (Shingles).

Abnormal sensations are referred to as a parasthesia. There are many causes of parasthesia including stroke, nerve injury, herniated vertebral disks, viral infections, and shingles (Herpes Zoster infection). You should see a doctor to determine what is causing this specific sensation.

It could be an allergic reaction to something. Have you experienced hives after the needles feeling on your back? If you are talking about needles and a great amount of pain it could be that you have a back injury such as a ruptured disc. If it is that you may want to go to the doctor.
