The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement that began in Europe in the mid-eighteenth century. Inspired by and in turn inspiring the American and French Revolutions, the Enlightenment praised concepts of liberty, freedom, and equality. The First Great Awakening, in which religious fervor led to revivals and increased spirituality, took place in the British North American colonies around the same time.

The Enlightenment was a period of non-religious philisophical thought that stessed reason. Enlightenment thinkers focused on the nature of democracy and human nature. The First Great Awakening was a religious revival that took place in the English colonies in America around 1750. They both took place in the 18th century.
