                                                          Plessy v. Ferguson was heard by the US Supreme Court in 1896. It was a landmark decision as it upheld  racial segregation as legal under the U.S. Constitution. As a result, the "separate but equal" doctrine was maintained. It remained in place in U.S. law until its the 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education.
