A person who has undergone splenectomy for hypersplenism or some other cause is exposed to infectious risk by capsulated organisms like pneumococcus wich can cause fatal pneumonia. Hence as a precaution, patients undergoing splenectomy are given pnemococcal vaccine prior to surgery which along with other vaccines like meningococcal vaccine must be administered every 3-5 years to prevent infection[OPSI-overwhelming post-splenectomy infections].
This is not true!!! I had my spleen removed at 3 for a blood disorder. Pneumococcal pneumonia is encapsulated bacteria and CAN KILL those without a spleen easily. There is a 10 year vaccine for this that these patients MUST HAVE. add a comment
