Leeches are worm-like parasites which attach themselves to mammals and feed on their blood. They are also used medically to perform micro-surgery

There are many different types of leaches that live in freshwater ponds. Many of them do not feed on living flesh, but act as scavangers - feeding on the dead and decomposing bodies of pond life. They are difficult to get rid of using common chemicals without hurting existing fish populations.
