Pompeii was an ancient Greek city that was destroyed when the volcano Vesuvius erupted. Many of the buildings, murals, and even people were preserved by the volcanic ash, allowing us to get a glimpse into their lives at the moment of the blast.

Pompeii was a Ancient Roman city that was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted on Augustus 24th, 79 AD. The city was completely covered with ash, which allowed it to survive intact. Beginning in the 15th century AD, material remains were found--it is still being excavated.
