Nervous tics are sometimes associated with a medical disorder known as Tourette's Syndrome. Tourette's Syndrome requires both a verbal tic and a movement tic to quality. Tics that do not meet the Tourette's Syndrome qualifications are usually termed "nervous tics" and include several activities including blinking, cracking knuckles, or peeling labels.

Think about this as a form of being itchy. The drive to scratch the itch is automatic and doing so relieves the irritation temporarily. Not scratching the itch takes concious effort and intensifies the urge to scratch. People ticcing are acting unconciously and when they don't tic are cooperating.
