Hopefully I'm describing this correctly. Another word for Masking is tape & float, I think. Generally used to repair cracks on walls or to conceal openings when putting up sheet rock.

Masking walls is a tedious task, but is helpful when painting. First, clean and dry the surface as any dirt can stop the tape from sticking. Next, make sure the tape you have chosen will adhere to the wall. Finally, do not stretch the tape as you want it to be smooth and adhere properly.

Use painters tape, then apply a thin coat of RTV/Caulk along the paint side of the mask and let set. Will keep paint from flowing under the mask.

Take seam tape, put plaster on wall, take over plaster and plaster over the tape. Let dry and sand smooth. You can do the same in the corners. Fold the tape in half, cover the side seam with the creased part and plaster, and sand when dry.

Masking a wall is normally done when you begin painting. The best way to mask a wall is by using painters tape to cover up areas in which you didn't want to paint. Another option is masking tape, but it is generally stickier.
