Born in 18 June, 1971 in Birkenhead, England, is a former Irish international football player who played as a midfielder.McAteer signed for Sunderland on the 19th October 2001 for £1,000,000. He though could not prevent Sunderland from relagation in his first season. McAteer left Sunderland in order to play for his home town club Tranmere Rovers.
