The voltage regulator/rectifier does the charging of the battery. If the regulator/rectifier is bad it will be letting the battery overcharge. If it is undercharging, first test the battery (most local shops will do this free) if the battery is bad replace it, if it is good replace the volatage regulator.

Voltage regulators convert the AC current that your bike's charging system produces to DC voltage that then charges the battery. Almost all current motorcycle use a 3-phase charging system which you can easily identify if you have three similar wires going into the regulator. The other two wires going into the regulator are the ground positive wire.
