Alveoli are structures in the mammalian lung that make gas exchange and hence, breathing, possible. Alveoli must produce a surfactant to help them over come the effect of the surface tension of the water surrounding them.
The surface tension is due to the innert pressure of the surface. The surface of the
liquid has a outside pressure and it maks a tension due to the surface tension.
