"Engine adjustment" is a little vague. I can only assume your talking about the fuel in which case you'll need to adjust the fuel set screws.

This is a fairly difficult repair. If you consider yourself a novice I would insist that you contact an automotive expert. Depending on the brand of car you have it'll affect the severity of this adjustment. The basic is you'll need to remove the engine and check the pistons to see where the problem is from.

Buy yourself a Haynes manual that tells you about the engine and consult a parts dealer that you are confident with.

Most have a fuel mixture screw, an oil mixture screw, and an idle throttle position screw. Otherwise, I can't imagine what else you'd need to adjust.

Adjustment is critical it allows proper fuel and lubricant to the engine. Some can manually be adjusted and some cannot. One set screw sets fuel the other sets air intake.
