What can I do if the previous owner of my home failed to disclose problems with the plumbing?

Do I have any recourse?

Your recourse will depend on the state you live in. You might want to start by contacting your closing attorney, your real estate agent or your home inspector. Your state attorney general may also be able to give you information. Much will depend on whether you can prove the previous owner had actual knowledge of the problem.

The only thing you can really do is sue them in court for the costs of the repairs. This can take time. You can do it before you have the repairs done as long as you have estimates from a certified plumbing contractor. Class A, Licensed plumbing contractors are best to use.

Some localities have laws that require home sellers to disclose all known problems, but this isn't the case everywhere. Check with your local housing office.
