What can I do if I'm being sued for civil debt?

All matters of debt are civil matters. There is no "criminal" debt. If you are sued, you can be heard in the matter. The creditor will likely win and be able to attach your wages, bank accounts and/or personal and real property. Bankruptcy is a common response.

Try and contact the person who is suing you and see if you are able to come to some kind of an agreement. Try and work out a payment plan, something like a monthly pay schedule and the length of time you desired. Whatever you decide make sure you stick to it because they can come after you again

You should talk to a lawyer right away. If you ignore the lawsuit, you could lose through default. You do have a time limit in which to respond.

Seek proof that the debt is actually owed. There are firms that seek payment of debts from those who simply have similar names. Bring any proof of payments made.

You can ignore the suit but then a judgment can result in a garnishment against you. You can also respond via an Answer in the court you're sued in.
