First wash the filter with soap and water; next clean coils and inside the face of the unit using a small brush or canned air; finally put the filter back with a sheet of bounce, which is always fresh smelling or spray the filter with Lysol spray or Fabreze.

Air conditioners often have a tray to collect moisture. Mold can grow there and cause odor. If the smell is like burned oil, parts could be rubbing and need service.

The odor coming from an air conditioner can be from the filters. Usually there are two filters that need changing yearly. They cost nearly 10 dollars. They make the difference.

Check your air filter. It may be clogged with dust, or could have become moldy. You may be able to clean it yourself. If not, you should be able to find a replacement filter for your specific model of air conditioner.
