The cause of a dermoid cyst is due to skin structures that became trapped during fetal development. These skin structures continue to grow outside and/or inside which causes the cyst to grow larger as the structures also grow larger. Sebaceous glands or hair follicles can also form part of these cysts.

Cysts can be caused by anything as serious as a tumor or as minor as a plugged duct or simple infection. Often they will go away on their own and aren't anything to worry about.

There are many reasons cysts form. I would have it evaluated by an eye doctor or your regular doctor to see if its concerning to them.
