What can be done for chronic heel soreness in horses?

This seems to be a big problem in one of my horses.

Talk to a good farrier. Often shoes can be made that take the pressure off the heel area, allowing the injury to heal. Heel can even be covered and protected.

You can talk to your farrier about this problem. If he cannot help ask your vet. They can put special shoes on your horse to reduce some of the soreness. Your horses hooves could be growing different that normal too. Some horses hooves grow higher in the heel area and tend to cause the horse to be sore.

A horse may have pain if its heels are trimmed too low, or if its feet are built such that the heels tend to be low. A farrier can trim the horse to leave the heels higher or apply shoes to put the foot in a position that minimizes soreness.

There are many causes of heel pain. I'd advise a thorough lameness exam by your equine vet, and contacting a qualified trimmer. Treatment can be determined from there.

You must make sure that they are always shoed properly and out for regular exercise. This means not leaving them in the stable for an extended amount of time.
