Why do they smell?

These normally smell because just like anything else that stays wet, they tend to mold and mildew and grow bateria. There are several ways to clean ice makers such as using bleach which will kill the bacteria. Then use vinegar to kill the blean smell. Good luck

You probably need to empty it completely and clean it out. They can smell from mold, bacteria or even well water.

All refrigerator/freezers with ice makers have a filter. They should be changed every four months. It is located on the refrigerator side toward the top back. Give that a try.

Check your owners manual and see what can be done or call or email the maker. It sounds like you have old water sitting in the tubes.

I would clean it out really well with bleach/clorox if you are able to do so. I would see if that makes it better. Otherwise I wouldn't want it.

If you have unwrapped food in your refrigerator such as an onion, the smell will penetrate the ice maker or cubes from the air that is recirculated from refrigerator to freezer, back to refrigerator. You need to keep foods wrapped that are out in the open.

Smelly icemakers could be absorbing food odors from the freezer and refrigerator. Make sure all food containers are sealed tightly. Also, empty the icemaker and clean it with bleach.

Do an overall cleanup of your refrigerator. Cover or wrap leftover foods properly in your refrigerator. Throw away old or expired food. Use filtered water for making ice. Put a few boxes of baking soda in strategic places in your fridge to keep the food and ice fresh smelling.

I have done all of these things and NONE of them have helped. My ice still smells like garlic and tastes awful!

I accidentally fixed an awful and persistent ice problem by cleaning accumulated dust off the cooling coils under the unit. This enabled the freezer to cool down much more quickly and circulate less of the offending food smell from the refrigerator.
