The best thing you can do is to prevent early decay by cleaning with a mild brush and dog toothpaste, alongside with annual dental cleaning with your favorite vet.

Feeding your dog hard food will help prevent tooth decay. You should also have a veterinarian do regular plaque cleanings. These measures are preventive maintenance. If these do not work and your pet has cavities or a gum disease then the veterinarian will have to repair work which could include oral surgery.

The most important thing is to prevent tooth decay to begin with. That means keeping your dog's teeth clean. Avoid too much soft food and give him plenty of hard toys to chew, bones or rawhide or hard biscuits. You can always brush your dogs teeth, if your dog is cooperative. Use a stiff brush and no toothpaste.

One simple thing that can be done to reduce tooth decay in dogs is to feed them kibble and keep soft foods to a minimum. They leave debris in the gums at the base of teeth which leads to irritation.
