The dentist will clean the area out, apply medicine to the area to kill the infection in it, and will add either a filling or a crown. It might require a root canal, depending on the severity of the damaage. You child may also get a prescription for an antibiotic to help kill the infection.

Your dentist will most likely pull the tooth or send you somewhere to have it pulled. An abscessed tooth needs to come out. An abcess can lead to very serious infection and that infection could inturn go to the brain and cause very serious problems. An abcess is generally not something that will go away on its own.
