What bees live in the ground?

They are probably not bees, as bees do not live underground. The insect in question is most likely a hornet of some kind. Be careful!!

One of the most prevalent species of ground-dwelling bees in the United States are called yellow jackets. They're not, however, true bees; rather, yellow jackets are members of the wasp family. Regardless, yellow jackets live in large colonies and are dangerous when disturbed.

Bumblebees are a member of the bee family, and even though their nests are much smaller then those of honey bees, they often build them within tunnels in the ground made by other animals.

Different types of bees can live in the ground. There is no specific species that inhabits the ground. Some of these bees can be wasps, bumble bees, yellow jackets, cicada killers, and digger wasps.

Bumble bees will use mice burrows to make homes in. Yellowjackets will dwell underground as do andrenid bees. Andrenid bees live one bee to a nest although the nests will cluster. Ground-nesting bees are gentle souls and usually don't sting.
