Under COBRA, your former employer is required to offer you health insurance for up to 12 months; however, it may come at higher rates than you paid as an employee.

Typically, you are entitled to COBRA. This allows you to self-pay the full cost for coverage that was in force at the time of your separation, up to 18 months. There are some exceptions. They must notify you of your COBRA rights; see your HR department of benefits administrator.

You can keep your medical insurance through the COBRA program; however, it is a lot of paperwork and can be costly. Contact your human resources director for information on how to keep your existing coverage.
