There are many uses for chromatography. They include the analysis of mixtures of compounds, splitting them into their components. The components can then checked against reference information to identify them. Conversely, the purity of a component can be established. These all have uses in forensics, the pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries.

Chromatography is a form of purification or analysis that is useful for the separation of mixtures. The mobile phase (mixture being separated) is passed through a stationary phase (purifier) that allows the different components of the mixture to diverge from each other.
