What are the uses for sodium oxide?

Sodium oxide is a chemical used in the making of glass and ceramics. Its presence causes melting to occur at a lower temperature. In normal glass, the recipe calls for 15% sodium oxide. This also makes the glass more elastic, and less prone to shattering.
