There are 4 basic types of saxophones. The soprano, the alto, the tenor and the baritone. The baritone is not recommended for a youngster to start on because it is too large. The common beginner saxes are the alto and the tenor. Alto is the most common, but tenor is needed by most band teachers.

There are 4 different saxophones. Soprano sax is smallest with a high pitch. An alto sax is a bit larger and is most common to learn on, and has a deeper tone. Then there is a tenor sax. Still a bit larger with a deeper tone. Then there is the baritone sax. It is the largest with the deepest tone.

There's the Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bariton & Bass Baritone. Alto's are best for students. For boys, the soprano which resembles a clarinet is too wimpy, and tenor too big.
