The types of mtherboards are very variable , depending on the manufacturer , on the type of proccesor that it suports , on the type of RAM it suports. how many RAM slots it has , and if it suport ATA or SATA or SATA2 hard drives.

There are three types of motherboards, Full AT, Baby AT and ATX. Full AT board is 12 inches wide and 11 inches long. The Baby AT board is 8.5 inches wide and 10 inches. And the ATX board is 7.5 inches wide and 12 inches long.

Motherboards come in different sizes for different towers (atx being common, btx, micro, etc) or based on the chip (intel, amd, etc).

Anything less than 15 years old is going to be an ATX. The only difference is if it's with made for intel or AMD processors. Some people have a preference, but either one will work fine, both companies make good products. Older styles were the AT and mini AT. They're both obsoleted, don't expect to find them.
