What are the steps to solving an algebra equation?

I am trying to help my son with homework and I can't remember.

Simple rules. 1) Whatever you do to one side, you have to do to the other. 2) Get the variables together. 3) Move the numbers to the other side. 4) Divide or multiply both sides to that there is only 1 X, by itself. That's you're answer. Tips: x + x= 2x; 4 (2x+3)= 8x+12; 4(1/4 x)= x.

Depending onthe degree of the equation, itcould be from a 2 step solve to several steps ranging from simple x and y solving to graph complicated polynomials. Simply check if the question asks to solve for a specific variable, like x or y, then move letters to the left side of the equal sign and numbers to the right side.

If of the form ax + y = b where x is a variable, a, y and b are consonants, subtract y and divide by a to get x=(b-y)/a
