Two things to consider; the process is much longer than can be described in 50 words and if you do uncover something interesting you will have damaged the site for scientific research. Try looking for vacations that include working on a dig. National Geographic has some listed for a start. This could be a great thing.

1. Make sure it's a place you CAN dig. 2. Put up a site grid, ropes tied up in squares. 3. Getting a layer of dirt at a time, shift it through a screen. 4. Stop digging in the unit, square, once you hit subsoil, usually clay or sand. 5. Refill hole with cleared dirt.

Archeologists use specialized techniques to protect the fragile artifacts they recover. Many hobbyists get started by signing up as volunteers or crew on an archeology project through a local university or museum, study group for elders, government-sponsored archeological dig. The work is painstaking and hard, but very interesting and rewarding.

Go get a metal detector and practice walking the beaches looking for metal. This will teach you patience, which is the first necessary skill needed in archaeology.

Well archaeologists trace an area which was ancient and then they go back to it. Then they start retracing clues for evidence.

i would start at local historical societies and museums, libraries and online websites that contain information about the area you are interested in. i would then find out how to obtain permission, if possible, to excavate in that area. also, i would talk to any professors at the local colleges and universities for more information.
