What are the small, brown rice-shaped things in my dishwasher?

They could be many different things. Usually small rodents leave droppings behind that sound like what you are describing. Most likely it would be the feces of a small rat or possibly mouse. They sell traps at your local hardware store or supermarket that will help you to eliminate these pests.

It sounds like you have a little bug problem! They might just be small beetles that are getting in from outside.
