There are many symptoms. The primary symptoms include tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia (slow movement), and postural instability (impaired balance/coordination). Bradykinesia includes the short, shuffling steps. Rigidity can affect facial muscles.

When there is a history of Parkinson disease in your family, you and your doctor should keep an eye our for early signs. Early signs of Parkinson's disease include resting tremors, increased problems with balance, lack of facial emotions, slurring in your speech, sleep disturbances, and easily being distracted.

Signs of Parkinson disease can be very vague at first. A lot of people say that their first sign was involuntary movement of the little finger. It may start on one or both sides of the body with uncontrollable shaking of hand or hands or legs and feet. The progression time varies from person to person.

One of the most common signs of Parkinson's disease is a resting tremor usually seen in the hand. Parkinson's can also cause a shuffling gait and gait instability, muscle rigidity, slowed movements, and a mask like face. At its later stages, Parkinson's can cause personality changes, mood disturbances, and dementia.

My father died from Parkinson's a few years ago. The early signs he had were that his handwriting got tiny. He also started to lose his sense of smell and just did not notice bad smells that would bother everyone else. The thing that made him go to the doctor was when he began to have one foot drag sometimes.
